All of these are about the relationship we have with ourselves. And of all the relationships we will have throughout our life, the relationship we have with ourselves will have the greatest impact on our success and our happiness. Being your own “best friend” will make the good times better and the hard times manageable.

What is a Kind Inner Voice?

It is a way of being with yourself that is patient, respectful and kind. Sometimes it is an energy or feeling and sometimes it is a real inner dialogue or way of talking to yourself. The kind inner voice might say something like, “You can do it” or “You are really strong” “This is a hard time but it won’t last forever” or “Wow, good job!”

What do you MEAN I talk to myself ??

Whether we realize it or not, most of us keep up a running commentary about what we are doing and how we are doing it. In the areas of our life where we are comfortable and confident, that “inner dialogue” or “self talk” is usually neutral or positive. In the areas that are challenging for us our inner dialogue is often critical or demeaning, making a difficult situation even more miserable.

But if I was that NICE to myself...
    Would I ever get anything done?

I used to worry about that too. But after working with hundreds of people who had procrastination and “laziness” problems I have learned that it is actually the harsh and critical voice that slows people down and makes them avoid doing difficult things. Most people get MUCH MORE done when they stop criticizing themselves. If you ever had a teacher or coach who inspired you to do your best, you know what I mean. The really inspiring ones are usually respectful and encouraging with a spark in them that makes you excited to show them what you can do. Believe it or not, there is a step by step process we can use to create that inner motivation and excitement for ourselves.
